Consistency is Key (NLGI Grades)
In the world of industrial maintenance, choosing the right grease consistency can mean the difference between a machine running for 5 years or 5 months. The NLGI grade defines how 'hard' or 'soft' a grease is. For most bearing applications, an NLGI 2 grade is the 'all-purpose' standard.
Temperature Persistence
When machines work under high heat, the lubricant must stay where it belongs. Lithium complex greases are famous for their high drop points, often exceeding 260°C. This ensures that the oil doesn't separate from the thickener under stress.
Extreme Pressure (EP) Additives
For heavy loading, 'neat' grease isn't enough. EP additives create a sacrificial layer on the metal surface, preventing welding and scoring under shocked loads. Look for molybdenum disulfide (Moly) for the most demanding applications.
